Lore

Biology

Salazzle stands 1.2 m tall and weighs 22.2 kg. It is a slim, dark grey lizard with a grey-purple underside and wavy dark pink markings that look like wisps of smoke. Its tail is whip-like, and the dark pink palms of its hands can unleash flames. Since Generation VIII the games show it walking on all fours and rearing up only to battle or greet its Trainer.

Behaviour

Salazzle lives deep in caves with its group of Salandit. Males that fail to bring food get a slap from a flame-spewing palm, says the Ultra Moon entry. When two Salazzle compete, the Shield entry says whoever has gathered more Salandit wins. People dilute its pheromone-laden gas for use in perfumes, according to the Moon entry.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it deep in caves. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's North and South Provinces, including Alfornada Cavern.

Powers

Like Salandit it has Corrosion, which lets it poison Poison and Steel types, with Oblivious as its hidden Ability. Fire Lash is its signature move in Generation IX, and it knows it from the moment it evolves; it also learns Flamethrower, Dragon Pulse and Nasty Plot. In Alola a Totem Salazzle glows with a golden aura of Z-Power. With Special Attack 111 and Speed 117 it is a fast special attacker.

Name origin

Salazzle may combine salamander with dazzle or sizzle. The Japanese name is Ennewt (エンニュート), which may blend en (flame, or bewitching) and newt.

Design inspiration

Salazzle appears to be based on both the real, poisonous salamander and the fire-linked mythical kind, and on whiptail lizards. It may also draw on the mo'o, a lizard figure from Hawaiian myth that is usually female, which would suit Alola's Hawaiian inspiration.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Salandit at level 33, which only a female Salandit can do.

In the games

A Totem Salazzle is the boss of Kiawe's trial at Wela Volcano Park in Sun and Moon, where the species first appeared, and beating it earns a Firium Z. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught in Paldea, and The Teal Mask lets Salandit evolve in Kitakami. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Lusamine's Salazzle debuted in 'Rescuing the Unwilling!', where Kiawe battled it. Plumeria's Salazzle lost to Ilima and his Eevee during the Manalo Conference's Battle Royal round in 'Battle Royal 151!'.

Fun facts

  • Before Scarlet and Violet's Version 2.0.1 update, neither Salazzle nor Salandit could learn Flame Charge by TM, and Salazzle could not learn Dragon Tail either.
  • Bulbapedia notes that real whiptail lizards include female-only species, such as the New Mexico whiptail.
  • In Ultra Moon you can receive a Totem-sized Salazzle from Samson Oak at Heahea Beach in return for 50 Totem Stickers.
