Steenee official artwork

Steenee is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Fruit Pokémon, number 762 (#0762) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 8.2 kg.

Steenee bounces around the forest with a hard calyx on its head, and the Pokédex says it plays happily with bird Pokémon that peck at it because its sepals are so tough. The Fruit Pokémon has a tomboyish streak and a kick to match.

Lore

Biology

Steenee is 0.7 m tall and weighs 8.2 kg. It is a humanoid, plantlike figure with a dark purple torso and legs and a white head, arms and hips. A large light green calyx sits on its head, with two big leaves out to the sides like pigtails. Its wide hips are made of six segments, like the flesh of a mangosteen, and Bulbapedia says its scent is a popular antiperspirant.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia calls Steenee tomboyish and hard to get along with. It twirls like a dancer, and the Sword entry says anyone who inhales the scent it spreads feels a surge of happiness. Its leaves spin as it moves and often strike nearby objects, which it does not seem to mind; foes get hit by the leaves first and then kicked by its hard legs.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in forests. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in East Province and West Province.

Powers

It has the same Abilities as Bounsweet: Leaf Guard, Oblivious and the hidden Sweet Veil. It adds Magical Leaf, Teeter Dance and Aromatic Mist to its moves and finishes with Leaf Storm at level 46. Speed 62 is its best stat, and the rest are modest, since it is a step on the way to Tsareena.

Name origin

Steenee may combine mangosteen with teeny or teenager, and may also nod to the plant sweetener stevia. The Japanese name is Amamaiko (アママイコ), which may blend amai (sweet) and maiko (dancing girl).

Design inspiration

Steenee looks modelled on a mangosteen and a young girl. Its twirling and its Japanese name suggest a dancer too, though that is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Bounsweet at level 18. It evolves into Tsareena when it levels up while knowing Stomp, which it learns at level 28.

In the games

Steenee is an in-game trade at Seafolk Village in Sun and Moon, where it first appeared; Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add wild ones in the Lush Jungle. It returns in Sword and Shield and in Scarlet and Violet, including 3-star Tera Raids, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Steenee debuted in 'A Seasoned Search!', when Mallow's Bounsweet evolved into it after a battle. In 'Deceiving Appearances!' five Bounsweet surrounded Mallow's Steenee at Aether Paradise, and she cuddled one.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Steenee's peeled rind can be used to ease stomach pains.
  • Bulbapedia names Corvisquire as its natural predator, though the Shield Pokédex says one that pecks at it gets a smack from its sepals.
  • Hatched from an Egg, a member of this family can know Acupressure, Endeavor or Synthesis.
