Tsareena kicks first and laughs afterwards. The Pokédex says one blow from this proud Grass type can floor even a kickboxing champion, and it cackles as it keeps kicking an opponent that has already lost.

Lore

Biology

Tsareena stands 1.2 m tall and weighs 21.4 kg. It is a slender, plantlike figure with a dark purple body, a white head and hips, and long, powerful legs ending in small pointed feet. A light green calyx on its head has three long leaves that hang like hair, and a little purple crown marked with four thin yellow stripes rests on top.

Behaviour

Tsareena is proud and aggressive, and it punishes anyone who approaches it with bad intentions. It can even turn on its own Trainer if given commands it dislikes. The Scarlet entry says touching the crown on its calyx calms it at once. Bulbapedia says it puts that strength into defending its earlier forms, and the Moon entry says it can turn up as the face of beauty salon adverts.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it is found in Stony Wilderness.

Powers

Its Abilities are Leaf Guard, Queenly Majesty, which stops opponents using priority moves against it and its allies, and the hidden Sweet Veil. Trop Kick, a tropical kick that lowers the target's Attack, comes with evolution. It also knows Power Whip, picks up Leaf Storm at level 46 and learns High Jump Kick at level 58. Attack 120 with Defense and Special Defense both 98 makes it a sturdy physical attacker.

Name origin

Tsareena may combine tsarina, the Russian title for a female monarch, with mangosteen, and may also include queen. The Japanese name is Amajo (アマージョ), which may blend amai (sweet) and joō (queen).

Design inspiration

Tsareena looks modelled on a mangosteen and on a queen, and the fruit's nickname, the Queen of Fruit, may be a deliberate nod according to Bulbapedia.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Steenee when it levels up while knowing Stomp, with no level requirement.

In the games

In Sun and Moon, where it debuted, Tsareena can only be obtained by evolving Steenee. It returns in Sword and Shield, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star Tera Raids, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Mallow's Steenee evolved into Tsareena in 'All They Want to Do is Dance Dance!', immediately after learning Stomp.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Tsareena is the sole known Pokémon able to learn Trop Kick, and the sole one that can have Queenly Majesty.
  • The Violet Pokédex says Tsareena views Quaquaval as its rival, and Bulbapedia calls Quaquaval its rival in kicking.
  • Bulbapedia notes that mangosteen trees have separate sexes and that a male tree has never been found, which may echo why this whole family has no males.
