Lore

Biology

Toxtricity is a purple, lizard-like biped, 1.6 m tall and 40 kg, with spikes on its back and wrists and a crescent ring of six pale spikes round its waist. It gets its sound by clawing at organs on its chest, six on the slouching, yellow-trimmed Amped Form and four on the upright, light-blue Low Key Form, matching the strings of a guitar and a bass. As it plays it scatters toxic sweat.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia describes Amped Form as extremely confident and irritable, charging anyone who meets its eye, and Low Key Form as selfish and dismissive, taunting foes into fighting rather than attacking first. The Pokédex says many youths admire the lazy way Toxtricity starts fights and never loses its cool, whoever it is facing.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; Serebii lists mountain and cave biomes in Paldea, where it lives in Alfornada Cavern. In Legends: Z-A it appears only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Stagnant water, which it chugs to absorb the toxins in it, according to the Pokédex.

Powers

Its Ability Punk Rock boosts sound-based moves and halves damage from them; its other Ability is Plus (Amped) or Minus (Low Key), with Technician hidden. Its signature move is Overdrive, learnt at level 44, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn. Gigantamax Toxtricity merges both forms, with a tail like a transmission tower, and slams down a giant guitar of electricity with G-Max Stun Shock, a move only it can use. Base Special Attack 114 makes it a strong special attacker.

Name origin

Toxtricity may combine 'toxic' or 'toxicity' with 'electricity'. The Japanese name Strinder (ストリンダー) may combine 'strings' with 'salamander'.

Design inspiration

Yusuke Kozaki designed Toxtricity, Toxel and the Gigantamax form. Bulbapedia notes it resembles agama lizards or newts, and appears to draw on punk rock guitarists, with a mohawk-like crest, torn trousers and spiked bracelets. The Gigantamax guitar slam may reference guitar smashing. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Toxel at level 30, in whichever form its Nature decides.

In the games

Toxtricity's Amped Form appears in Max Raid Battles and its Low Key Form comes by evolving Toxel in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles, and Roxie and Piers each pair with a Toxtricity in Pokémon Masters EX.

In the anime

Both forms debuted in 'Battling Turned Up to Eleven!' playing in the Maximizers band. In Horizons, Ryme's Low Key Form Toxtricity defeats Roy's Fuecoco in his Tera Training battle in 'Resonating Spirits in a Challenge to Ryme!', and Fuecoco finally beats it in the rematch in 'A New Song for Fuecoco'.

Fun facts

  • In Pokémon Adventures, Casey's Toxtricity is a Low Key Form nicknamed Tera, and it can Gigantamax.
  • Bulbapedia, citing the official Sword and Shield site, says Gigantamax Toxtricity holds as much as a million litres of poison.
  • At level 52 Amped Form learns Shift Gear while Low Key Form learns Magnetic Flux.
