Lore

Biology

Venusaur is a squat blue-green quadruped with a thick brown trunk holding up a big pink, white-spotted flower. It is 2.0 m tall and weighs 100 kg. The flower collects sunlight for energy and grows more vivid when Venusaur is well fed. The Pokédex says its scent calms people's emotions and draws in other Pokémon, and that it smells strongest after rain. A female's flower has a seed-bearing centre that a male's lacks.

Behaviour

Venusaur is strongest in summer, when there is most sun, and keeps moving to follow the light. In the anime a Venusaur leads the Evolution ceremony for a garden of Bulbasaur and Ivysaur and bends plants and vines to its will. It is rarely seen in the wild.

Habitat

Grassland, according to the Pokédex habitat list. Canon says little more about where wild Venusaur live.

Powers

Venusaur strikes with vines, Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder, Poison Powder and a charged Solar Beam. Mega Venusaur grows extra flowers and sturdier legs; Gigantamax Venusaur swings vines that, says the Sword Pokédex, could topple a 10-storey building, and uses the exclusive G-Max Vine Lash. In battle it is a bulky special attacker with 100 base Special Attack and Special Defense.

Name origin

Venusaur likely joins 'Venus' (probably the Venus flytrap) or 'venom' with '-saur'. The Japanese name Fushigibana (フシギバナ) likely combines fushigi ('strange') and hana ('flower').

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori has said in an interview that frogs inspired the whole line; Venusaur's stout build and hollow ears recall horned frogs. The flower resembles Rafflesia arnoldii, a giant parasitic bloom.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Ivysaur at level 32. It is the first Pokémon in National Pokédex order with a visible difference between males and females.

In the games

Venusaur fronts the boxes of Green and LeafGreen, and the Trainer Red is usually shown with one. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan) and leads the Meadow Zone in PokéPark Wii. In Scarlet and Violet it comes by transfer or evolution, and in Legends: Z-A a Rogue Mega Venusaur is a boss that hands over the Venusaurite when beaten.

In the anime

In 'Mewtwo Strikes Back', Corey's Venusaur, Bruteroot, is snatched by Mewtwo's special Poké Balls and freed by Ash. May's Bulbasaur turns out to have grown into a Venusaur in 'Pruning a Passel of Pals!'.

Fun facts

  • Ken Sugimori says Venusaur is one of his favourite Pokémon and his least favourite to draw, because the design is so complicated.
  • The Trading Card Game's first Mega Evolved Pokémon cards were Mega Venusaur and Mega Blastoise.
  • An early Venusaur design in the 'Capsule Monsters' pitch carried Ivysaur's name and index number.
  • Venusaur and Tropius have exactly the same height, weight and Egg Groups.
  • Pick Charmander in Red and Blue and no Trainer in the whole game uses a Venusaur, so you cannot even see one without trading.
