Lore

Biology

Beldum is a blue, nearly spherical machine, 0.6 m tall and 95.2 kg, with one large red eye and a cluster of claws at its rear. The Pokédex says it floats by producing a magnetic force that pushes against the ground's own magnetism, and it uses controlled pulses of magnetism to talk to others of its kind. It can also pull opponents in with magnetism so that they are caught on its sharp claws.

Behaviour

Beldum has real feelings: when it is in a bad mood, the Pokédex suggests giving it a magnet. Anger makes it burst out magnetism strong enough to break nearby machines. In swarms, Beldum talk by brain waves and move as if they were one Pokémon.

Habitat

The species data lists rough terrain, and Bulbapedia says it is scarce in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in The Indigo Disk's Canyon Biome, Chargestone Cavern and Polar Biome. In Legends: Z-A it is at Lysandre Labs, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Beldum's Ability Clear Body stops other Pokémon from lowering its stats, and its hidden Ability Light Metal halves its weight. As a first stage it is a poor fighter, with base stats totalling only 300, so its Defense of 80 is its one real strength.

Name origin

Beldum may come from 'dumbbell', the weight used in training. Its Japanese name, Dumbber (ダンバル), seems to come from the same word.

Design inspiration

Beldum appears to be a magnetic robot built on the shape of a dumbbell. It also resembles a single limb of Metang or Metagross, a hint at how the line evolves.

Evolution notes

Beldum evolves into Metang at level 20, which evolves into Metagross at level 45. Bulbapedia notes that this line reaches each of its next stages earlier than any other Powerhouse family.

In the games

Steven Stone leaves a Beldum for you at his house in Mossdeep City once you have entered the Hall of Fame in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire hold the gift back until you have completed the Delta Episode.

In the anime

Morrison's Beldum debuted in 'Less is Morrison' and spent most of its time outside its Poké Ball.

Fun facts

  • The Beldum line is the only non-Legendary, non-Mythical family with a catch rate of 3, which Bulbapedia calls the lowest in existence.
  • Of all the Powerhouse lines, only Beldum learns a single move by levelling up: Take Down from Generation III to Generation VII, then Tackle from Generation VIII onwards.
  • The whole line has exactly the same two Abilities as the Legendary Registeel.
