Lore

Biology

Metagross is 1.6 m tall and 550 kg, a turquoise disc of metal with four legs, red eyes and a metal cross in the centre of its face. It tucks its legs in to float. The Pokédex says its four brains are linked by a complex network of neurons, so it can do any calculation in a flash by parallel processing.

Behaviour

Metagross is a calculating hunter. The Pokédex says it analyses opponents with great accuracy and calmly backs them into a corner, and that it has fantastic strength to go with its brains. It pins prey under its four legs and claws, then chews it with the mouth on its stomach. In snowy mountains its magnetic powers grow in the freezing cold, so Metagross there are full of energy.

Habitat

The species data lists rough terrain. In Scarlet and Violet you evolve it from Metang in The Indigo Disk, and it appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 20.

Powers

Metagross has Clear Body, with Light Metal hidden. It hits with Meteor Mash, Hammer Arm and Zen Headbutt, fires Psychic, and can use Earthquake or the self-destructing Explosion. With Metagrossite it Mega Evolves into one body that links a Metagross, a Metang and two Beldum, and its Ability becomes Tough Claws. With base Attack of 135 and Defense of 130, it is a slow but crushing attacker.

Name origin

Metagross may combine 'metal' with 'cross', for the mark on its face. 'Gross' could also be the number 144 (12 x 12), echoing its weight of about 1,212 lbs, or the German groß, meaning large. The Japanese name is Metagross (メタグロス).

Design inspiration

Metagross seems modelled on a robot, a supercomputer and a spider, and it also recalls a UFO or a lander. Bulbapedia suggests its face may echo the biggest cog in the Antikythera mechanism, a very old analogue computer. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Metang evolves into Metagross at level 45, making it the final form of the Beldum line.

In the games

Steven Stone sends out his Metagross last in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and Mega Evolves it at the first chance, and if you beat him again at the Pokémon League afterwards, he hands over a Metagrossite. Bulbapedia notes that he always leads with it at the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2. Metagross debuted in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

In the anime

Steven's Shiny Metagross debuted in 'Mega Evolution Special II' as his main battler, and it can Mega Evolve. Alain's Metang was revealed to have become a Metagross in 'Analysis Versus Passion!', and it faced Ash's Pikachu in 'Finals Not for the Faint-Hearted!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia lists Mega Metagross as the heaviest Mega Evolved Pokémon, at 942.9 kg, a gain of 392.9 kg.
  • Because Grass Knot and Low Kick scale with weight, Metagross takes the same damage from them whether or not Light Metal halves its weight.
  • In Pokémon Horizons, the cross on Orla's Metagross changes into different mathematical operators when it is calculating.
