Lore

Biology

Chewtle is 0.3 m tall and weighs 8.5 kg. It is a teal, turtle-like Pokémon with a head bigger than its body, a darker blue shell with brown trim, an orange bulb on each cheek and a short orange horn as hard as rock. The Pokédex says it opens a fight by hitting with the horn, and once its opponent flinches it clamps down with its single large tooth.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Chewtle's front tooth is still growing in, and the itch makes it snap at anything in front of it. It sometimes bites another Chewtle's horn, and the two end up tussling. It can hang by its teeth from low heights, and the Pokédex says children hold up sticks that Chewtle have bitten to see whose can last longest.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found by lakes in Paldea's South, East and West Provinces, and by lakes and rivers in Kitakami in The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Chewtle has Strong Jaw, which boosts biting moves, or Shell Armor, with Swift Swim hidden. It learns Bite, Jaw Lock and the water attack Liquidation, plus Counter and Protect for defence. Its best base stat is Attack 64, so it is a modest first stage.

Name origin

Chewtle may combine 'chew' and 'turtle'. The Japanese name is Kamukame (カムカメ), which may join kamu ('to bite') and kame ('turtle').

Design inspiration

Chewtle looks modelled on the common snapping turtle, and its oversized head recalls a big-headed turtle.

Evolution notes

Chewtle evolves into Drednaw at level 22.

In the games

Chewtle is found on several Galar routes and in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, its debut game. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 1-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

Chewtle debuted in 'The Climb to Be the Very Best!', when one from the Rocket Prize Master bit onto Jessie's hair. Jessie then uses it to battle Ash and Goh in 'Kicking It from Here Into Tomorrow!'.
