Lore
Biology
Chimecho is a small, bluish-white Pokémon, 0.6 m tall and 1 kg, shaped like a Japanese wind chime, with beady yellow eyes, a long tag-like tail and a yellow sucker on top that it uses to dangle from a branch or under a building's eaves. Its body is hollow, so its cries echo inside it.
Behaviour
Chimecho rides the wind, is nocturnal and flies more actively in the hot season. The Pokédex says it talks to others with seven different cries, which also startle foes and, when it is enraged, turn into ultrasonic waves. A Legends: Arceus researcher guesses that its body magnifies faint breezes within it.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is grassland, and Bulbapedia adds woods and some mountain areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Kitakami from The Teal Mask onwards, and in Legends: Z-A only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Diet
It picks Berries with its tail and eats them, and FireRed's entry adds nuts.
Powers
Its only Ability is Levitate. It learns Extrasensory and Stored Power, supports with Heal Bell, Safeguard and Heal Pulse, and can use Hyper Voice. Mega Chimecho, from the Mega Dimension DLC, becomes Psychic and Steel and is ringed by six smaller copies of itself; its cries are said to purify evil spirits, and its sound waves can leave listeners forgetting who they are. Its Special Attack rises from 95 to 135.
Name origin
Chimecho may combine 'chime' and 'echo'. The Japanese name is Chirean (チリーン), which may blend chirinchirin (a bell's jingling sound) and fūrin (wind chime).
Design inspiration
Chimecho appears to be based on fūrin, glass wind bells hung at Shinto shrines to ward off evil spirits, and its colours may recall the dress of a miko, a shrine maiden. Mega Chimecho may draw on the khakkhara, a staff carried by Buddhist monks whose jingling rings are said to drive off animals and spirits. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Chingling evolves into Chimecho when levelled up with high friendship at night. Chimecho had no pre-evolution until Chingling arrived in Generation IV.
In the games
In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness Chimecho cooks dinner for Wigglytuff's Guild and runs the Chimecho Assembly, and in Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, where it is found at the top of Mt. Pyre.
In the anime
James's Chimecho debuted in 'Who's Flying Now?', where he caught it at Fortree City's Feather Carnival. He cherished it so much that he never let it battle, and in 'Sweet Baby James' he left it in the care of his Nanny and Pop-Pop while it recovered from an illness.
