Lore

Biology

Decidueye is 1.6 m tall and weighs 36.6 kg. It has a dark green face with an orange mask-like marking, brown wings and back, a mostly white body and a tail of three long leaves. A hood of leaves drapes over its head and shoulders, with two vines that can be pulled to close it further and sharpen its focus, or used as bowstrings. Dead leaves form a reddish-orange X on its chest.

Behaviour

Decidueye is cool and cautious but panics when surprised. It can mask its presence to attack foes that do not know it is there. The Pokédex says its shots can pierce a pebble from over 91 m (100 yards), and that when it cannot afford to miss it pulls on the vines of its hood to shrink its field of view.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it comes only through The Indigo Disk, by evolving Dartrix, or from HOME for the Hisuian form.

Powers

Its Abilities are Overgrow and the hidden Long Reach. Bulbapedia says only Alolan Decidueye can learn Spirit Shackle or use the Z-Move Sinister Arrow Raid. Hisuian Decidueye is Grass and Fighting, with red tail feathers and a hat-like crown; the Pokédex says air stored in its feather shafts insulates it against Hisui's cold. It has Scrappy as its hidden Ability and learns Triple Arrows, which Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can. Base Attack of 107 and Special Attack of 100 make Alolan Decidueye a mixed attacker.

Name origin

Decidueye may combine 'deciduous', 'duel' and 'deadeye' or 'bullseye'. The Japanese name is Junaiper (ジュナイパー), which may blend 樹 ju ('tree'), 'juniper' and 'sniper'.

Design inspiration

Decidueye is based on an owl, and Bulbapedia links it to the pueo, a Hawaiian owl that can appear as an ancestral spirit, which may explain the Ghost type, and to archers such as Robin Hood. Hisuian Decidueye's hat-like crown may recall a samurai archer's ayaigasa hat. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Decidueye evolves from Dartrix at level 34; in Hisui, Dartrix evolves into Hisuian Decidueye at level 36, the only regional form that evolves at a different level from its original, according to Bulbapedia.

In the games

Decidueye is the final form of the Alola first partner Rowlet in Sun and Moon and, as Hisuian Decidueye, of Hisui's Rowlet in Legends: Arceus. It is playable in Pokémon UNITE as a ranged attacker, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Decidueye debuted as a Battle Royal Trainer's Pokémon in 'Pushing the Fiery Envelope!', and Hau's, evolved from his Dartrix, appears in 'League Offenders and Defenders!'.

  • According to Bulbapedia, Decidueye's is the one first partner line in which the earlier stages hold a type advantage over the final form, for both its Alolan and Hisuian versions.
  • Decidueye is the sole Pokémon created after Generation VI with a regional form, which arrived just one generation later, the shortest wait of any regional form.
