Lore

Biology

Eldegoss is 0.5 m tall and weighs 2.5 kg. It has a light green head, a yellow cloak-like upper body and a darker green lower half like a dress, topped by a crest filled with cotton fluff dotted with small brown seeds. Bulbapedia says the fluff works as a cushion that protects its head from attacks.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says the seeds in its fluff are packed with nutrients, and Eldegoss scatters them on the breeze for the benefit of plants and other Pokémon. People prize its cotton too: Bulbapedia says cloth woven from Eldegoss and Cottonee cotton together is popular with luxury brands.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it is found at Motostoke Riverbank, Dusty Bowl, Giant's Cap and Stony Wilderness, and in the Crown Tundra at Ballimere Lake.

Powers

Eldegoss has Cotton Down or Regenerator, with Effect Spore hidden. It starts with Cotton Spore, sings with Sing and Hyper Voice, strikes with Razor Leaf and Leaf Storm, and heals with Synthesis and Aromatherapy. With base HP 60 and Defense 90 it is a bulky support Pokémon.

Name origin

Eldegoss may combine 'elder' with Gossypium (the cotton genus) or gossamer, and could also echo edelweiss, a flower covered in soft fuzz. The Japanese name is Watashiraga (ワタシラガ), which may join wata ('cotton') and shiraga ('white hair').

Design inspiration

Eldegoss resembles the seedpods of anemones such as the windflower, a plant widespread across the British Isles, and also dandelions and a full cotton ball. Bulbapedia suggests it may also play on stereotypical depictions of elderly women. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Eldegoss evolves from Gossifleur at level 20 and has no further evolution.

In the games

Eldegoss is used by Milo, the Grass-type Gym Leader of Turffield, who Dynamaxes it at the first chance, in Sword and Shield, its first games. It is also a playable Pokémon UNITE character that starts as Gossifleur and evolves at level 4. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

An Eldegoss debuted under a Trainer in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!'. A student at Indigo Academy owns one in 'The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One)'.
