Lore

Biology

Gossifleur is 0.4 m tall and weighs 2.2 kg. A large yellow flower covers most of its cream-coloured head, with red, hair-like growths around the back and a green, stem-like body on a single leg. The Pokédex says it anchors that leg in the ground to bask, and once it has soaked up enough sunlight its petals spread and it blooms brilliantly. Bulbapedia says its pollen has a healing effect and was once brewed into a folk-remedy tea for sick children in Galar.

Behaviour

Gossifleur whirls about in the wind while singing, and Bulbapedia says it steers by twisting its body and petals, so it can cover long distances. Its pollen draws Cutiefly, according to Bulbapedia.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it prefers lands with clean water and air. In Sword and Shield it is found on Routes 2 and 3 and at Motostoke Riverbank.

Powers

Gossifleur has the Abilities Cotton Down or Regenerator, with Effect Spore hidden, and, as far as anyone knows, only it and Eldegoss can ever have Cotton Down. Its songs show in Sing and Hyper Voice, while Leafage, Razor Leaf and Leaf Tornado cover Grass attacks and Aromatherapy and Synthesis mend. With base Defense and Special Defense of 60 but Speed of only 10, it is a slow, sturdy first stage.

Name origin

Gossifleur may combine Gossypium, the cotton plant genus, with French fleur ('flower'), and could also nod to gossamer. The Japanese name is Himenka (ヒメンカ), which may blend hime ('princess'), menka ('raw cotton') and ka ('flower'), perhaps with enka, a Japanese song style, for its singing.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Gossifleur is inspired by the flower of the cotton plant, and by a purported legend, known to Sword and Shield director Shigeru Ohmori, that grabbing cotton fluff as it drifts through the air may bring luck.

Evolution notes

Gossifleur evolves into Eldegoss at level 20.

In the games

Gossifleur lives in Galar in Sword and Shield, its first games, and, in the Crown Tundra expansion, around Ballimere Lake. It can also appear in Max Raid Battles. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Goh catches a Gossifleur in 'Meeting Up with the Monarch!'. In 'It's... Champion Time!' Ash, Goh and their friends watch one evolve into an Eldegoss.
