Lore

Biology

Thievul is a slim orange-maroon fox with long black ears, a black mask-like patch around its eyes and whiskers shaped like a pointed moustache. Its puffed white chest looks like a cravat, and its paws, back and tail tip are black. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 19.9 kg.

Behaviour

Thievul is a patient stalker. The Sword Pokédex says it secretly marks possible targets with a scent, follows the trail, then strikes to steal when they least expect it, and the Legends: Z-A entry says it uses its nose to find their nests. Bulbapedia says it competes with Liepard for territory.

Habitat

Canon gives no habitat for Thievul. In Sword and Shield it lives on Routes 7 and 9, Bridge Field, Hammerlocke Hills and Stony Wilderness. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

Powers

Its Abilities are the same as Nickit's: Run Away, Unburden and the hidden Stakeout. It learns Thief the moment it evolves, and later Night Slash, Foul Play and Parting Shot, and TMs add Dark Pulse and Play Rough. With 87 base Special Attack and 90 Speed, it is a fast special-leaning trickster.

Name origin

Thievul may combine 'thief', 'evil' and 'vulpine' (fox-like). The Japanese name is Foxly (フォクスライ), from 'fox' and 'sly', and Bulbapedia says it may also nod to Guy Fawkes, since Fawkes and fox sound alike in Japanese.

Design inspiration

Thievul appears to be a red fox styled as a gentleman thief. Bulbapedia says its face and moustache-shaped whiskers resemble the stereotypical burglar and highwaymen such as Dick Turpin, and its feud with Boltund, which appears to be based on a foxhound, may reference fox hunting. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Thievul evolves from Nickit at level 18.

Pokémon Masters EX has a Special Costume sync pair of Zinnia and Thievul. In Legends: Z-A wild Thievul arrive only with the Mega Dimension DLC, in the 3-star Dark zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. It first appeared in Sword and Shield.
