Lore
Biology
Hatterene is a thin white humanoid, 2.1 m tall and 5.1 kg, almost hidden under extremely long, layered hair that fades from baby blue through pink to white, and a semi-translucent pink dress that gives it a witch-like silhouette. The hair on its head forms a wide-brimmed hat with a pointed crown, and a single tentacle rises from the tip, ending in a bulb and a clawed, hand-shaped growth. Bulbapedia says it floats, moving by levitation and short-range teleportation.
Behaviour
The Pokédex calls it the Forest Witch and says its psychic power causes headaches, which deters others from approaching. If you are too loud around it, you risk an attack from the claws on its tentacle. Bulbapedia notes that in the anime it toys with people's minds and conjures illusions for fun.
Habitat
The Pokédex warns that a forest with no signs of living creatures may be Hatterene's territory. In Scarlet and Violet you can evolve Hattrem, meet it in 5-star Tera Raid Battles or find it in Kitakami's Timeless Woods.
Powers
Its Abilities are Healer and Anticipation, with Magic Bounce hidden. It knocks out intruders with a beam and psychic-charged claws, using moves such as Psycho Cut, Dazzling Gleam, Psychic and Healing Wish. Gigantamax Hatterene is 26 m tall, with its hair forming a chamber around its body; the Sword Pokédex says it reads emotions from over 50 km (30 miles) away and attacks the moment it senses hostility, and Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon known to use G-Max Smite. With 136 base Special Attack but only 29 Speed it is a slow, ferociously strong special attacker.
Name origin
Hatterene may combine 'hatter' and 'serene'. The Japanese name is Brimuon (ブリムオン), possibly from 'brim' and muon ('silence').
Design inspiration
Hatterene seems based on a hag, a witch who lives alone in the woods, such as Baba Yaga. Its hat may blend a witch's hat with a hennin, a tall medieval headdress, and the hair hanging from the top recalls the ribbons on a maypole. Bulbapedia also suggests the Harionago, a Japanese ghoul that attacks with long hair, and Rapunzel, which the openings in its Gigantamax form could echo, and reads Hatterene as the gentler counterpart of Grimmsnarl. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.
Evolution notes
Hatterene is the final form of Hatenna, evolving from Hattrem at level 42.
In the games
Bede, one of the player's rivals, Gigantamaxes his Hatterene at the first opportunity in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Liko's Hattrem evolves into Hatterene in 'Liko and Hattrem, Bonded by Happiness!' after a joyful moment with her Trainer. In 'Must Be Our Heroes and the Witch!', a Hatterene lures a heartbroken Brock into a forest until Ash, Misty and Cilan step in.
