Lore

Biology

Orbeetle has a big, ladybird-shaped head with a red shell and seven dark blue spots. All but the seventh, which straddles the join between the two halves of the shell, can glow in cyan and white rings. Its black and white face has yellow antennae like eyebrows and a red stripe like a moustache. Bulbapedia says the real body underneath is much smaller, with thin black limbs and sharp yellow feet. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 40.8 kg.

Behaviour

Orbeetle is famous for its intelligence, and the Sword Pokédex says the size of its brain is proof of its immense psychic power. It studies its surroundings by sending out psychic energy, and Bulbapedia says it rarely flies, preferring to hover.

Habitat

In Sword and Shield it lives at Giant's Cap, Lake of Outrage and the Slumbering Weald, and in Max Raid Battles across Galar and the Isle of Armor. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Frisk reveals an opponent's held item on entry, Swarm boosts its Bug moves when it is low on health, and Telepathy is hidden. It attacks with Psychic, Psybeam and Bug Buzz, and sets up with Hypnosis, Calm Mind and Psychic Terrain. Gigantamax Orbeetle swells into a flying saucer, its wings vanish, and the Gigantamax Pokédex entry says that at full power it could take over the minds of every living thing around it; only it can use G-Max Gravitas. With 120 base Special Defense it is a sturdy support Pokémon.

Name origin

Orbeetle may combine 'orb', 'orbit', 'orbital' and 'lady beetle'. The Japanese name is Eolb (イオルブ), perhaps from eol (said to be Irish for 'knowledge') or Io (a moon of Jupiter) with 'orb'.

Design inspiration

Orbeetle seems to be based on the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata. Its big brain and mind control may also echo science-fiction aliens or mad scientists, or Dinocampus coccinellae, a wasp whose larva controls its ladybird host. The Gigantamax form may be based on a UFO with a tractor beam. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Orbeetle evolves from Dottler at level 30.

In the games

Orbeetle's Gigantamax form shows up in Gigantamax Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, its first games, and the Crown Tundra adds it to Dynamax Adventures.

In the anime

Orbeetle debuted in the opening segment of 'Getting More Than You Battled For!'. An Exceed security officer's Orbeetle appears in 'The Treasure of Eternity' and again in 'The Truth Revealed!', where it catches Amethio, Zirc and Onia snooping.

Fun facts

  • Of the Bug types introduced in Generation VIII, it is the fastest and has the highest Defense.
  • Its French name Astronelle mixes the Greek astron ('celestial body') and astronef ('spacecraft') with coccinelle ('ladybird'), and its German name Maritellit mixes Marienkäfer with Satellit.
  • Bulbapedia points out that the adult wasp Dinocampus coccinellae shares Orbeetle's slim body and vivid blue-green eyes, which a ladybird lacks.
