Lore

Biology

Rookidee is a small dark blue bird with a yellow chest, a black mask-like plume of feathers and white marks under its red eyes. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 1.8 kg. The Pokédex says those white markings intimidate fainthearted Pokémon.

Behaviour

Rookidee is brave and reckless, and the Pokédex says it jumps about nimbly to disorient much larger opponents. The Violet entry adds that females are fussier than males and will peck relentlessly at anything that dirties their wings.

Habitat

Canon gives no habitat for Rookidee. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's East and South Provinces, across mountains, grassland, rocky ground and towns.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it preys on Grubbin.

Powers

Keen Eye stops its accuracy being lowered and Unnerve stops opponents eating held Berries, while the hidden Ability Big Pecks protects against Defense drops. It learns Peck, Fury Attack, Pluck and Drill Peck, and finishes the set with Brave Bird at level 36. With 47 base Attack and 57 Speed it is a frail early bird.

Name origin

Rookidee may combine 'rook', 'rookie', 'kid' and 'chickadee'. The Japanese name is Kokogara (ココガラ), perhaps from karasu ('crow'), or from ko ('child') joined to kogara (the willow tit).

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed the whole line, Bulbapedia says. Rookidee appears to draw on tits and chickadees such as the blue tit and great tit rather than crows, even though it grows into a corvid, and its colours also resemble the hooded mountain tanager. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Rookidee evolves into Corvisquire at level 18, which becomes Corviknight at level 38.

In the games

Rookidee has a Pokédex entry in Legends: Z-A, but wild Rookidee only arrive with the Mega Dimension DLC, in the Flying-type zones of Hyperspace Lumiose; it also has a Pokédex entry in Pokémon Pokopia. It first appeared in Sword and Shield.

In the anime

In 'Meeting Up with the Monarch!' three Rookidee nest while two Corviknight guard them, and Leon bandages one injured wing. A flashback in 'Partners in Time!' shows Sonia's Rookidee beating Leon's Charmander in their first battle.

Fun facts

  • According to Bulbapedia, Rookidee and Corvisquire are the earliest Pokémon that are purely Flying type without being Legendary.
  • Its French name Minisange is mini plus mésange (tit), and its German name Meikro blends micro, Meise (tit) and crow.
  • It shares the Tiny Bird Pokémon category with Pidgey, Spearow and Natu, although Natu has sometimes gone by Little Bird Pokémon as well.
  • It ties with Natu as the shortest Flying type.
