Lore

Biology

Garchomp is 1.9 m tall and 95 kg. Dark blue with a red belly and a gold star on its snout, it has jet-engine-like horns, three white talons on each foot and arms that end in large claws, with curved fins for flight. Males have a notch in the dorsal fin. Folded up with its wings out, the Pokédex says, it looks like a jet. Its fine scales cut drag, and their sharp edges hurt any opponent that strikes it directly.

Behaviour

Garchomp is feral. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex urges utmost caution if you meet one in the wild. The Pokédex says it swoops on bird Pokémon and gulps down the whole flock, battles Salamence in mid-air when they compete for food, and heads home to its den before its body gets cold after a hunt.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it makes its home in volcanic mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in West Province Area Two, the Great Crater of Paldea and Area Zero, and appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids. In Legends: Z-A it is in Centrico Plaza's Wild Zone 20.

Powers

Its Abilities are Sand Veil and Rough Skin, which is hidden. It learns Crunch on evolving, then Dragon Claw, Dig, Sandstorm and Dragon Rush. Base Attack 130 and Speed 102 with a stat total of 600 make it a fast bruiser. Mega Garchomp, from X and Y, fuses its arms into red blades and becomes more violent; its Ability is Sand Force. Mega Garchomp Z, from the Mega Dimension DLC, is a pure Dragon type with Levitate that hovers calmly and slashes with long wing claws.

Name origin

Garchomp may combine its Japanese name, 'chomp' and possibly 'gargantuan'. The Japanese name is Gaburias (ガブリアス), which may blend gaburi ('with a big bite') and Carcharodon carcharias, the great white shark's scientific name, perhaps with āsu ('earth').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Takao Unno as Garchomp's designer. It appears to combine dinosaurs, wyverns and sharks, plus fighter planes with shark-mouth nose art nicknamed 'desert sharks', which Mega Garchomp Z emphasises. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Garchomp evolves from Gabite at level 48 and is the final form of the line.

In the games

Champion Cynthia's main partner is a Garchomp in Diamond and Pearl, the games where the species debuted. Lance fields one in his HeartGold and SoulSilver rematch, and Lebanne uses one in Legends: Z-A. Mega Garchomp Z arrives in the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Cynthia's female Garchomp debuted in 'Top-Down Training!'. Pokémon Journeys revealed that she has raised it since it was a Gible in an Egg, and that it can Mega Evolve. Professor Sycamore's Garchomp first appeared in 'Lumiose City Pursuit!' and also Mega Evolves.
