Lore

Biology

Jolteon is a yellow quadruped with spiky fur, a white ruff around its neck and large pointed ears. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 24.5 kg. The Pokédex says its cells make a weak charge that the static electricity in its fur amplifies, and that it gathers negative ions from the air to blast out 10,000-volt bolts. When it is angry or startled, its fur stiffens into charged needles that it can fire like missiles.

Behaviour

Jolteon is sensitive and easily becomes sad or angry, and every change of mood charges it with power. The Pokédex says it is high-strung, so Trainers can find it hard to grow close to it, and warns that lightning sometimes strikes beside it.

Habitat

Urban, according to the Pokédex habitat list; Bulbapedia says it is mostly seen in cities and towns with Trainers. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's West Province and on the North Province's Socarrat Trail.

Powers

Volt Absorb turns Electric hits into healing, and its hidden Ability Quick Feet boosts its Speed when it has a status ailment. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Thunder Wave, Pin Missile, Discharge and Thunder, and Thunderbolt by TM. Its 130 base Speed is the highest of any Eevee evolution, backed by 110 base Special Attack.

Name origin

Jolteon may combine 'jolt' with 'eon', the ending every Eevee evolution shares. The Japanese name is Thunders (サンダース), simply 'thunders'.

Design inspiration

Motofumi Fujiwara designed Jolteon. Like its relatives it mixes dog, cat and fox features, and Bulbapedia suggests the raijū, a lightning beast from Japanese myth, with the cheetah behind its speed. The spiky coat may come from cartoon lightning bolts, or from porcupines and the myth that they shoot their quills. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Eevee evolves into Jolteon with a Thunder Stone.

In the games

Jolteon has been one of Eevee's three original evolutions since Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Coronet Highlands. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild and a 6-star Tera Raid boss, and in Legends: Z-A it is in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza and again in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Sparky's Jolteon debuted in 'The Battling Eevee Brothers'. Volkner used a Jolteon against Ash in 'The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!', where Infernape beat it, and Red's Jolteon is one of his main battlers in Pokémon Origins.

Fun facts

  • Its Japanese name differs from Zapdos's only by a final -s.
  • A paralysed Eevee that meets a Thunder Stone becomes Jolteon still paralysed.
  • Jolteon and Electrike share the English category 'Lightning Pokémon', but the two Japanese categories use different words for lightning, Kaminari and Inazuma.
  • In 'To Evolve or Not to Evolve, That Is the Question!', Ash taught Mikey's Eevee Mimic with a TM, and it beat Sparky's Jolteon with Jolteon's own Pin Missile.
