Leafeon official artwork

Leafeon is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Verdant Pokémon, number 470 (#0470) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 25.5 kg.

Leafeon is the Verdant Pokémon, a Grass type whose cells are closer to a plant's than an animal's, so it lives on sunlight and keeps the air around it clean. The Pokédex says its tail can bring down a big tree with a single blow.

Lore

Biology

Leafeon is a tan quadruped with dark brown paws and small green sprouts across its legs, chest and back, while its ears and tail look like ragged leaves. It is 1 m tall and weighs 25.5 kg. The Pokédex says it performs photosynthesis, and that its tail is sharper than a sword made by a master. Its scent smells of fresh grass when it is young and of fallen leaves as it ages.

Behaviour

Leafeon dislikes disputes, but to protect its friends it hones its leafy tail to a blade edge. Bulbapedia says the air a sleeping Leafeon gives off can help other Pokémon sleep deeply. In Galar its scent is prized, and the Pokédex says a popular perfume is made from it.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list gives none, but one entry places it in quiet, deep forests with clean rivers. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's West Province and on the North Province's Socarrat Trail.

Diet

It needs no food: the Pokédex says it makes its energy by photosynthesis.

Powers

Leaf Guard protects it from status ailments in strong sunlight, and its hidden Ability Chlorophyll doubles its Speed there. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Razor Leaf, Leech Seed, Synthesis, Giga Drain, Swords Dance and Leaf Blade. With 110 base Attack and 130 base Defense it is a sturdy physical attacker.

Name origin

Leafeon may combine 'leaf' with 'eon', the ending every Eevee evolution shares. The Japanese name is Leafia (リーフィア), perhaps also from 'leaf'.

Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Leafeon. Bulbapedia sees cats and foxes in its shape, and in a cry that recalls both a meow and a fox's chirp. Its tan and brown colouring may come from a Siamese cat or a red fox, and the sprouts give it plant traits. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Eevee evolves into Leafeon with a Leaf Stone, which has worked since Generation VIII, or by levelling up near a Moss Rock, the only way before then.

In the games

Leafeon is wild in Scarlet and Violet and also a 6-star Tera Raid boss there. In Legends: Z-A it is in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza and again in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose. It debuted in Diamond and Pearl, and in Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Obsidian Fieldlands.

In the anime

Zoey's Leafeon is its best-known anime role: it appears in 'Double-Time Battle Training!' and teams up with Mismagius in the Sinnoh Grand Festival in 'Coming Full-Festival Circle!'.

Fun facts

  • An early Generation II idea for it was a root-footed Grass Pokémon called Rīfi, and Battle Revolution's data still holds that name for Leafeon.
  • The Diamond and Pearl Pokédex gives Leafeon, Glaceon and Umbreon identical footprints.
  • In Black 2 and White 2, Eevee cannot become Leafeon or Glaceon until the Elite Four is beaten, because their rocks are in places blocked until then.
  • HeartGold and SoulSilver have no Moss Rock, so a Leafeon there has to be traded over from Diamond, Pearl or Platinum.
