Lore

Biology

Flareon is a quadruped with short reddish-orange fur, long ears with black insides, a yellow tuft on its head and a bushy tail and mane. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 25 kg. The Pokédex says it stores inhaled air in a flame sac and breathes out fire of nearly 1,650°C (3,000°F). Its fluffy collar lets heat escape so its body never gets too hot.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia describes Flareon as curious and inquisitive, and says it is mostly found around people and is rarely seen in the wild. It appears to regulate its body temperature while it sleeps.

Habitat

Urban, according to the Pokédex habitat list. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and North Provinces, including Dalizapa Passage.

Diet

The Pokédex says it breathes fire on berries or prey until they are well done, then eats them.

Powers

Flash Fire blocks Fire moves and then powers up its own, and its hidden Ability is Guts. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Ember, Fire Fang, Fire Spin, Lava Plume and finally Flare Blitz, with Flamethrower by TM. Its 130 base Attack makes it a hard-hitting physical Fire type.

Name origin

Flareon may combine 'flare' with 'eon', the ending every Eevee evolution shares. The Japanese name is Booster (ブースター), literally 'booster', perhaps as in a booster rocket.

Design inspiration

Motofumi Fujiwara designed Flareon. Its long ears, orange coat and fluffy tail may come from red foxes, while its mane and body shape could recall lions or cats such as the Maine Coon. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Eevee evolves into Flareon with a Fire Stone.

In the games

Flareon has been one of Eevee's three original evolutions since Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Crimson Mirelands and Cobalt Coastlands. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild and a 6-star Tera Raid boss, and in Legends: Z-A it is in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza and again in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Pyro's Flareon debuted in 'The Battling Eevee Brothers', and Egan's Flareon beat a giant Magcargo in 'Some Like it Hot'. Penny's Flareon, shown in 'Terastallization vs. Mega Evolution!' in Pokémon Horizons, fights beside her Sylveon in the next episode.

Fun facts

  • Its Pokédex entries disagree on its body temperature: Red and Blue give about 871°C (1,600°F), most games about 899°C (1,650°F) and Crystal about 927°C (1,700°F).
  • Flareon is the only Eeveelution that cannot swim in Scarlet and Violet, so it is sent out on a platform over water.
  • After the Generation II special split, Flareon was the only original Kanto Eeveelution not to get 110 Special Attack; its 110 went to Special Defense, leaving Special Attack at 95.
  • No other Eeveelution has a type advantage over more than one of its relatives: Flareon beats both Leafeon and Glaceon.
