Lore

Biology

Vaporeon is a light blue quadruped with a spiky ridge down its back, a white fin around its neck and three cream-webbed fins on its head, two like ears and one like a dorsal fin. It is 1 m tall and weighs 29 kg. A mutation gave Eevee its fins and gills, and it swims with its tail fin. The Pokédex says the fins also sense moisture: when they tremble, rain is a few hours away.

Behaviour

Vaporeon lives close to clean, clear water and rests quietly on beautiful shores. If an enemy closes in, the Pokédex says it slips below the surface to hide, blending in so perfectly that it leaves no sign of itself.

Habitat

Urban, according to the Pokédex habitat list, though Bulbapedia says it prefers clean freshwater lakes and shores. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South, East and North Provinces, including Casseroya Lake.

Diet

It waits invisibly in the water to ambush fish Pokémon.

Powers

Water Absorb turns Water-type hits into healing, and its hidden Ability Hydration cures status ailments in rain. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Aurora Beam, Haze, Acid Armor, Muddy Water and, at level 50, Hydro Pump. With 130 base HP and 110 base Special Attack it is a bulky special attacker.

Name origin

Vaporeon may combine 'vapor' with 'eon', the ending every Eevee evolution shares. The Japanese name is Showers (シャワーズ), plausibly the English 'shower', as in rain or a spray of water.

Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Vaporeon, and Bulbapedia reports her saying that its tail in particular was designed with mermaids in mind. She first gave it mostly dog-like features, and Ken Sugimori redesigned it with more cat-like traits. Fan readings also see sea lions, and the asrai, a water spirit, in its vanishing act.

Evolution notes

Eevee evolves into Vaporeon with a Water Stone, one of its three original evolutions from Generation I.

In the games

Vaporeon dates from Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Cobalt Coastlands, and a researcher's note there suggests mermaid folklore began with it. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild and a 6-star Tera Raid boss, and in Legends: Z-A it is in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza and again in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Rainer's Vaporeon debuted in 'The Battling Eevee Brothers', where it was targeted in one of Team Rocket's schemes. Mewtwo captured and cloned Fergus's Vaporeon in 'Mewtwo Strikes Back'.

Fun facts

  • In Yellow it is set to learn Haze and Mist at the same level, 42, but a bug stops two moves being learned at once outside the Day Care, so it only gets Mist if it reaches level 42 there.
  • In Colosseum and XD it has a snow-like visual effect around its body in battle, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon has.
  • Some Generation I sprites show a dog-like Vaporeon with black ear backs, a fin on each leg and a fin along its whole back, all dropped in Generation II.

Pokédex entries

Tests show that its cells closely resemble water molecules, which perhaps explains its ability to conceal its form while submerged. I believe the origins of mermaid folklore lie with this Pokémon. (Legends: Arceus)

Its body's cellular structure is similar to the molecular composition of water. It can melt invisibly in water. (FireRed, Shield)

When Vaporeon's fins begin to vibrate, it is a sign that rain will come within a few hours. (Gold, HeartGold, Sword)

Its cell structure is similar to water molecules. It melts into the water and becomes invisible. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

It detects nearby moisture with its fin. When its fin begins trembling rapidly, that means rain will fall in a few hours. (Ultra Moon)

Clean, clear waters are its usual habitat. When it's about to be attacked by an invading enemy, it dives into the water to hide. (Ultra Sun)
