Lore

Biology

Umbreon is a sleek, black quadruped with crimson eyes and tall pointed ears. Yellow rings mark its forehead and legs, and yellow bands circle its ears and bushy tail. It is 1 m (3'03") tall and weighs 27 kg (59.5 lbs). The rings glow faintly but ominously under a full moon, when it is excited or as it pounces. If it is angry, poisonous sweat from its pores is sprayed at the opponent's eyes.

Behaviour

Umbreon is nocturnal and most active in the small hours of the night. Its large eyes see clearly in total darkness, and the Pokédex says it hides silently against its black fur, waits for prey to appear and then lunges.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is urban, and Bulbapedia says it is rare in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Alfornada Cavern in the South Province and across the North Province.

Powers

Its Abilities are Synchronize and the hidden Inner Focus, which stops it flinching. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Snarl, Assurance, Moonlight, Dark Pulse and Mean Look. With 110 base Defense and 130 base Special Defense it is built to take hits.

Name origin

Umbreon may combine 'umbra' (Latin for shadow) with 'eon', the ending every Eevee evolution shares; Bulbapedia says Jeff Kalles suggested the English name. The Japanese name is Bracky (ブラッキー), possibly 'black' with 'lucky' or tsuki ('moon').

Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Umbreon and Ken Sugimori chose its colours; Bulbapedia says Nishida had no particular motif in mind. It reads as a personification of night and nocturnal animals, and its black and gold colouring resembles Egyptian cat statues of Bastet. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Eevee evolves into Umbreon when it levels up with high friendship at night, unless it is near a Moss Rock or Ice Rock, which turn it into Leafeon or Glaceon instead. Bulbapedia adds that a Moon Shard carried in the Bag also works.

In the games

In Colosseum, Umbreon and Espeon are the two Pokémon Wes starts with. Umbreon debuted in Gold and Silver, and in Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Crimson Mirelands. In Scarlet and Violet it also shows up in 6 star Tera Raids, and in Legends: Z-A you can evolve Eevee into it, with wild ones in the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Gary's Umbreon debuted in 'Power Play!', where it was revealed that his Eevee had evolved. Gladion's Umbreon, introduced in 'A Glaring Rivalry!', evolved from an Eevee he rescued as a toddler.

Fun facts

  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo it was a Poison-type prototype called Burakkī, with purple markings and a Poison Stone, and several Pokédex entries still hint at its poisonous sweat.
  • Before 2023 its official romanisation was 'Blacky'; the current spelling, 'Bracky', was trademarked on 19 December 2022.
  • In The Pokémon Company's 2020 Pokémon of the Year poll, it topped both Generation II and the Eeveelutions, with 67,062 votes, fifth overall.
  • It is the only Eeveelution immune to another Eeveelution's type, Espeon's Psychic.
