Lore

Biology

Eevee is a small brown quadruped with a bushy cream-tipped tail, a cream ruff of fur and long pointed ears. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 6.5 kg. The Pokédex says its irregular genes react to its surroundings and to the radiation of Evolution stones, and that its face may even come to resemble its Trainer's. Why only Eevee has such genes is unknown.

Behaviour

Eevee is rare and adaptable, able to suit a harsh habitat by taking a new form. In Pokémon Sleep it is said to dream of what it might become. In the anime, Mikey hides his Eevee from three older brothers who want him to evolve it, until it wins a battle on its own and they accept it as it is.

Habitat

Urban, according to the Pokédex habitat list, and rare. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South and West Provinces; in Legends: Z-A it appears across several districts of Lumiose City.

Powers

Eevee uses Quick Attack, Bite, Swift and Take Down. It can have Run Away or Adaptability, with Anticipation hidden. Only Eevee can use the Z-Move Extreme Evoboost, which raises every stat, and only Gigantamax Eevee can use G-Max Cuddle. Its stats are modest, so in battle it is mostly a starting point for its evolutions.

Name origin

Eevee is simply the sound of 'E-V', the first two letters of 'Evolution'. The Japanese name Eievui (イーブイ) is the same E-V.

Design inspiration

Motofumi Fujiwara designed Eevee. In a 2018 artbook he said Satoshi Tajiri asked for a Pokémon that could evolve into many types, so he drew a 'blank slate' with hints of fox, dog and cat but no single animal: something you might half-remember seeing as a child.

Evolution notes

8 evolutions, more than any other Pokémon: Vaporeon (Water Stone), Jolteon (Thunder Stone), Flareon (Fire Stone), Espeon (friendship by day), Umbreon (friendship at night), Leafeon (Leaf Stone), Glaceon (Ice Stone) and Sylveon (friendship while knowing a Fairy-type move). It was the only Pokémon with a branched evolution in Generation I.

In the games

Eevee is the partner Pokémon in Let's Go, Eevee!, and in Pokémon Pokopia you meet one outside Palette Town's Pokémon Center. It can be caught wild in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A, and it has been around since Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).

In the anime

Debuted in 'The Battling Eevee Brothers'. Ilima earned the Eevium Z with help from his Eevee, and Virgil's female Eevee leads a rescue team made up of its own evolutions. Nobody saw an Eevee evolve on screen until 'Last Call - First Round!', more than 13 years into the series.

Fun facts

  • Eevee is a palindrome and uses only two different letters, fewer than any other Pokémon name.
  • In the English beta of Red and Green it was called 'Eon', the ending shared by all its evolutions.
  • Eevee Day is an officially certified Japanese observance on 21 November, because 11/21 can be read as 'i-i-bu-i'.
  • It has 11 signature moves, more than any other Pokémon.
  • In 2021 Eevee became the first Pokémon to share a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon with Pikachu.
