Halloween Pokémon for Kids: Spooky Picks With Gentle Facts

Published

Halloween and Pokémon fit well together because two of the 18 types, Ghost and Dark, are made for it. Some of the Pokédex entries for these Pokémon are properly creepy, though, so this page sticks to the gentle ones. The lists and numbers come from the pokee.si data. The friendly facts come from the site's Pokédex notes, and we checked the pumpkin and costume details against Pokémon Database.

How many spooky Pokémon are there?

There are 65 Pokémon with the Ghost type, and 16 of them are pure Ghost. There are 69 with the Dark type, and 13 of them are pure Dark. Only 2 have both types: Sableye, Spiritomb.

That is a lot to pick from, and the full Ghost list is on the Ghost-type list. Here is a short one instead.

12 spooky Pokémon with gentle facts

Pokémon Type Category Height A gentle fact
Gengar Ghost/Poison Shadow Pokémon 1.5 m Pokédex entries say it hides in shadows and soaks up heat, cooling a room by nearly 5°C.

Greavard Ghost Ghost Dog Pokémon 0.6 m Friendly, and hates being alone: give it a little attention and it follows you.

Sableye Dark/Ghost Darkness Pokémon 0.5 m Eats gemstones, and has real gems for eyes.
Impidimp Dark/Fairy Wily Pokémon 0.4 m A pint-sized prankster.

The categories are the Pokémon's own labels from its Pokédex page. Some entries for these Pokémon are darker than the ones above. We left those out on purpose.

The pumpkin Pokémon

Pumpkaboo is the Pumpkin Pokémon, a Ghost and Grass type, and it comes in four sizes. It becomes Gourgeist when it is traded, which is a little odd for a pumpkin. You can read how that works in how Pokémon trading works. Pokémon Database also shows the same four sizes for each.

Size Pumpkaboo height Pumpkaboo weight Gourgeist height Gourgeist weight Gourgeist HP Gourgeist Speed
Small 0.3 m 3.5 kg 0.7 m 9.5 kg 55 99
Average 0.4 m 5 kg 0.9 m 12.5 kg 65 84
Large 0.5 m 7.5 kg 1.1 m 14 kg 75 69
Super 0.8 m 15 kg 1.7 m 39 kg 85 54

Size changes more than height. Small Gourgeist is the fastest of the four, with a Speed of 99, but it has the least HP, 55. Super Gourgeist is the opposite: 85 HP and a Speed of 54. If you want a pumpkin for a team, that trade-off decides which one to choose.

Ghost against Dark

Ghost and Dark moves both hit Psychic and Ghost types hard. Their weaknesses are different. This table comes from the type chart.

Type Weak to Resists Immune to Hits super effectively
Ghost Ghost, Dark Poison, Bug Normal, Fighting Psychic, Ghost
Dark Fighting, Bug, Fairy Ghost, Dark Psychic Psychic, Ghost

Normal and Fighting moves cannot hurt a Ghost type at all, and Psychic moves cannot hurt a Dark type. For more of these "no effect" cases, read immunities explained. To find out which types beat which, the Ghost type page and the Dark type page have the full list.

Names to say out loud

Spooky names are fun to say, and a few are hard. Read the respelling, then press Hear it. Capital letters mark the loudest part.

Pokémon Say it Audio
Poltchageist POHL-chuh-gyst Hear it
Mimikyu MIM-ih-kyoo Hear it
Pumpkaboo PUMP-kuh-boo Hear it
Gourgeist GOR-gyst Hear it
Sinistea SIN-is-tee Hear it
Greavard GREEV-ard Hear it
Litwick LIT-wik Hear it
Impidimp IM-pih-dimp Hear it

All of these are in the pronunciation guide, and Say the Name plays a name and asks you to find the Pokémon.
