There are 1,025 Pokémon in the National Pokédex, which runs from #0001 Bulbasaur to #1025 Pecharunt. Some websites say 1,028 because they add three newly announced Pokémon that don't have a number yet.
Both numbers are honest. They just count different things, and forms like Mega Evolutions muddle it further, because they look like new Pokémon but aren't.
The count, generation by generation
A generation is a group of Pokémon games that come with a batch of new Pokémon, usually set in a new region. Generation 1 gave us the first 151. Every generation since has added more, up to Generation 9 in the Paldea region.
| Gen | Region | Dex numbers | New species | Running total | First and last |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kanto | 0001–0151 | 151 | 151 | Bulbasaur … Mew |
| 2 | Johto | 0152–0251 | 100 | 251 | Chikorita … Celebi |
| 3 | Hoenn | 0252–0386 | 135 | 386 | Treecko … Deoxys |
| 4 | Sinnoh | 0387–0493 | 107 | 493 | Turtwig … Arceus |
| 5 | Unova | 0494–0649 | 156 | 649 | Victini … Genesect |
| 6 | Kalos | 0650–0721 | 72 | 721 | Chespin … Volcanion |
| 7 | Alola | 0722–0809 | 88 | 809 | Rowlet … Melmetal |
| 8 | Galar | 0810–0905 | 96 | 905 | Grookey … Enamorus |
| 9 | Paldea | 0906–1025 | 120 | 1,025 | Sprigatito … Pecharunt |
Generation 5 is the biggest, with 156 new Pokémon. Generation 6 is the smallest, with 72. If you want to know what each region is like, read Pokémon regions in order or pick one from the guides, such as Kanto or Paldea.
Add up the "New species" column and you reach 1,025, the last running total. Paldea added 120, the fourth biggest batch after Unova (156), Kanto (151) and Hoenn (135). Alola (88) and Kalos (72) added the fewest.
You can browse all 1,025 in the Pokédex.
Why some sites say 1,028
Generation 10 was revealed on 27 February 2026, which is Pokémon Day. The games are called Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, and they come out in 2027. Three first partners (starters) have been shown so far: Browt (Grass), Pombon (Fire) and Gecqua (Water).
Those three have no National Pokédex number yet. A site that adds them gets 1,028. A site that waits for numbers gets 1,025. As of October 2026, 1,025 is the count that matches the Pokédex.
If you like starters, there is a list of every one in starter Pokémon by generation.
Forms are not new Pokémon
This is the other reason counts get confusing. Some Pokémon can look different or change shape. These are called forms, and a form shares the Pokédex number of its species.
Charizard keeps the same number whether it is normal, Mega or Gigantamax. A Mega Evolution is a temporary power-up, and a Gigantamax form is a giant version from Pokémon Sword and Shield. Neither one is a new Pokémon. They are the same Pokémon looking different. There is a full list of Mega Evolutions if you want to see them.
A regional form is a version of an older Pokémon that adapted to a new region, often with a different type. Generation 7 called them "regional variants", and they have been "regional forms" since Generation 8. Bulbapedia counts 57 regional forms (58 if White-Striped Basculin counts). Our regional forms list shows all of them.
The pokee.si data holds 322 extra forms on top of the 1,025 species. They break down like this:
| Kind of form | How many |
|---|---|
| Mega Evolution (a battle power-up) | 97 |
| Gigantamax (a giant version) | 34 |
| Regional (Alolan 18, Galarian 19, Hisuian 16, Paldean 4) | 57 |
| Totem (big boss versions from Alola) | 12 |
| Other forms, such as Rotom's appliance forms | 56 |
| Look-only forms, such as Pikachu in a cap | 26 |
| Battle-only forms, such as Zen Mode Darmanitan | 28 |
| Primal | 2 |
| Gender | 4 |
| Size | 6 |
Only some species have a form at all. In the data, 224 species have at least one.
Counting special groups
Some Pokémon belong to special groups. These numbers come from the pokee.si data.
| Group | How many |
|---|---|
| Legendary | 71 |
| Mythical | 23 |
| Ultra Beast | 11 |
| Paradox | 22 |
| Pseudo-legendary (fan term) | 10 |
| Starters, counting their evolutions | 81 |
| Baby | 19 |
| Fossil | 25 |
"Pseudo-legendary" is a fan term. The official name is "Powerhouse Pokémon". You can read how Legendary and Mythical differ in Legendary vs Mythical Pokémon, and see the Ultra Beasts too.
Of the 1,025 Pokémon, 499 have a single type and 526 have two. So a little more than half are dual-type.
How to learn them all
Remembering 1,025 names is a big job. Start with the ones you like and say them out loud. The pronunciation guide shows how each name is said. Then test yourself with Guess the Pokémon, which shows you a silhouette or a blurry picture and asks for the name.
