Snow days are good Pokémon days. There are Pokémon that eat snow, Pokémon that sleep on drift ice, and Pokémon that stay warm in the middle of winter. This page collects gentle facts for the cold season. If you only want the list of Ice-type Pokémon, the Ice type page has it, so we will not repeat it here.
Ice is the rarest type
Ice has 48 Pokémon, the fewest of the 18 types; Fairy has 64. That is about 4.7% of all Pokémon. Only 16 are pure Ice. The rest pair Ice with another type, like Ice/Ground or Ice/Bug.
Ice Pokémon come in every size. The smallest is Snom (0.3 m, 3.8 kg), the tallest is Cetitan (4.5 m), and the heaviest is Glastrier (800 kg). Among Pokémon that are not Legendary or Mythical, the heaviest is Cetitan (700 kg). Of the 48 Ice types, 16 are white and 15 are blue. Those are the colours of snow and ice.
Cosy winter facts
These come from the Pokédex entries. In this table, 4 of the 12 Pokémon are not Ice types at all.
| Pokémon | Type | Category | Height | The winter fact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snorunt | Ice | Snow Hat Pokémon | 0.7 m | Arrives with the first snow. Tradition says a home it visits will do well for generations. |
| Snover | Grass/Ice | Frost Tree Pokémon | 1 m | Lives on snowy mountains. Its berries feel like frozen treats, and stories say it has wandered into villages and made friends with children. |
| Snom | Ice/Bug | Worm Pokémon | 0.3 m | Eats snow. The more it eats, the bigger the spikes on its back grow. |
| Swinub | Ice/Ground | Pig Pokémon | 0.4 m | Sniffs out mushrooms hiding under snow and grass. |
| Cubchoo | Ice | Chill Pokémon | 0.5 m | Sniffles before a move, and the frosty snot gives the move an icy touch. |
| Seel | Water | Sea Lion Pokémon | 1.1 m | Loves freezing water and happily swims at around 14°F, which is -10°C. |
| Spheal | Ice/Water | Clap Pokémon | 0.8 m | Likes living on drift ice, where fewer predators are, and its fur keeps in the heat. |
| Glaceon | Ice | Fresh Snow Pokémon | 0.8 m | Cools the air so fast that it leaves glittering diamond dust as it dances. |
| Delibird | Ice/Flying | Delivery Pokémon | 0.9 m | Prefers cold places, and the Alola ones can put up with some heat. |
| Fletchling | Normal/Flying | Tiny Robin Pokémon | 0.3 m | Its body is always warm, and people in cold places are said to sleep with one in bed. |
| Mareep | Electric | Wool Pokémon | 0.6 m | Its fluffy coat traps air, so it stays warm in winter and cool in summer. |
| Teddiursa | Normal | Little Bear Pokémon | 0.6 m | Hides food in many places before the winter makes it scarce. |
Snorunt, Snom, Fletchling and Delibird are also described on PokémonDB in much the same way.
And when winter ends
Budew (Grass/Poison) and Shaymin (Grass) are the spring pair. Budew's bud opens to show that winter is over, and Shaymin is said to arrive when the cold season ends and cover the land with flowers.
Ice versus the rest
Ice is not the sturdiest type. Ice Pokémon are weak to 4 types: Fire, Fighting, Rock, Steel. They resist only one, Ice. Ice moves hit Grass, Ground, Flying, Dragon for double damage, and they do half damage to Fire, Water, Ice, Steel.
The type chart for kids explains how to read these. PokémonDB also notes that Ice types cannot be frozen. If you want to know what freeze does to every other Pokémon, read status conditions.
Snow in battle
Snow is a real weather in Generation 9. The move Snowscape raises the Defense of Ice-type Pokémon for 5 turns, and the Ability Snow Warning makes it snow when a Pokémon enters a battle. In our data 5 Pokémon have Snow Warning: Snover, Abomasnow, Vanilluxe, Amaura, Aurorus. Two regional forms have it too, Alolan Vulpix and Alolan Ninetales. Earlier games used hail for the same job. Pokémon weather effects has the whole story, with rain, sun and sand too.
Castform changes with the weather. It is a Normal type with a sun form, a rain form and a snow-cloud form.

A good snow day game: pick one generation, open its page, and see how many you can name before you click.
One more idea
None of this needs a game. Pick a letter on the Pokémon names pages and listen to the names together. Our Christmas activities for kids page has more to do at home.
