Fire types are weak to Water, Ground and Rock moves, which do 2× damage to a pure Fire Pokémon. Fire is not weak to Ice or Fighting. It resists Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel and Fairy.
Our counts are species from the pokee.si Pokédex: 81 Fire species, 36 of them pure Fire.
What pure Fire resists
A pure Fire Pokémon takes half damage from Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel and Fairy moves. It has no immunities. Water, Ground and Rock do 2×, and everything else does normal damage.
In Generation I only, Fire types took normal damage from Ice moves. After that Ice has always been resisted. From Generation III, Fire types also cannot be burned at all.
Fire was the last type to get a Fire/Water Pokémon: Volcanion in Generation VI. Weather matters too. Harsh sunlight makes Fire moves 50% stronger and rain makes them 50% weaker, so rain is bad news for a Fire type twice over.
How the second type changes it
A second type is multiplied with Fire's matchups. Shared weaknesses become 4×, and a partner that resists Water, Ground or Rock cancels the weakness out. The three damage columns show Water, Ground and Rock in that order.
| Second type | Weak to | Water / Ground / Rock damage | Species | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal/Fire | Water, Fighting, Ground, Rock | 2× / 2× / 2× | 2 | Litleo |
| Fire/Water | Electric, Ground, Rock | 1× / 2× / 2× | 1 | Volcanion |
| Fire/Electric | Ground (4×), Water, Rock | 2× / 4× / 2× | 0 | Heat Rotom (form) |
| Fire/Grass | Poison, Flying, Rock | 1× / 1× / 2× | 1 | Scovillain |
| Fire/Ice | Rock (4×), Water, Fighting, Ground | 2× / 2× / 4× | 0 | Zen Galarian Darmanitan (form) |
| Fire/Fighting | Water, Ground, Flying, Psychic | 2× / 2× / 1× | 6 | Combusken |
| Fire/Poison | Ground (4×), Water, Psychic, Rock | 2× / 4× / 2× | 3 | Salandit |
| Fire/Ground | Water (4×), Ground | 4× / 2× / 1× | 2 | Numel |
| Fire/Flying | Rock (4×), Water, Electric | 2× / 0× / 4× | 6 | Charizard |
| Fire/Psychic | Water, Ground, Rock, Ghost, Dark | 2× / 2× / 2× | 3 | Victini |
| Fire/Bug | Rock (4×), Water, Flying | 2× / 1× / 4× | 4 | Larvesta |
| Fire/Rock | Water (4×), Ground (4×), Fighting, Rock | 4× / 4× / 2× | 3 | Magcargo |
| Fire/Ghost | Water, Ground, Rock, Ghost, Dark | 2× / 2× / 2× | 6 | Litwick |
| Fire/Dragon | Ground, Rock, Dragon | 1× / 2× / 2× | 3 | Reshiram |
| Fire/Dark | Water, Fighting, Ground, Rock | 2× / 2× / 2× | 4 | Houndour |
| Fire/Steel | Ground (4×), Water, Fighting | 2× / 4× / 1× | 1 | Heatran |
| Fire/Fairy | Water, Poison, Ground, Rock | 2× / 2× / 2× | 0 | none |
Fire/Rock is the worst pairing, 4× weak to both Water and Ground. Fire/Flying takes 4× from Rock, as Charizard does, but its Flying half makes it immune to Ground. Fire/Grass, Fire/Dragon and Fire/Water each cancel at least one of the three. A "(form)" label means no species has that pair, but a form does. The multiplying is shown in dual-type weaknesses explained.
Fire types with a 4× weakness
Of the 81 Fire species, 19 take 4× from at least one type.
| 4× weak to | Count | Fire Pokémon |
|---|---|---|
| Rock | 10 | Charizard, Moltres, Ho-Oh, Larvesta, Volcarona, Fletchinder, Talonflame, Oricorio, Sizzlipede, Centiskorch |
| Water | 5 | Magcargo, Numel, Camerupt, Carkol, Coalossal |
| Ground | 7 | Magcargo, Heatran, Salandit, Salazzle, Carkol, Coalossal, Iron Moth |
Magcargo, Carkol and Coalossal appear twice because they are 4× weak to two types. For every 4× weakness across the game, see Pokémon with 4× weaknesses.
Which Fire types escape each weakness
- Water: 5 Fire species are not weak to it, through Fire/Dragon, Fire/Water and Fire/Grass.
- Ground: 11 are not weak to it, through Fire/Flying, Fire/Bug and Fire/Grass.
- Rock: 9 are not weak to it, through Fire/Fighting, Fire/Ground and Fire/Steel.
Abilities that block a weakness
| Weakness | Ability that blocks it | Fire species that can have it | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | Water Absorb | 1 | Volcanion |
Almost no Fire type can shrug off its own weaknesses. Abilities do matter the other way round, though, for any Pokémon that gets hit by Fire. Flash Fire makes a Pokémon immune to Fire moves, and once hit its own Fire moves do 50% more damage. Well-Baked Body also gives immunity to Fire moves. Thick Fat, Heatproof and Water Bubble halve Fire damage. Fluffy is the trap: it halves contact moves but doubles damage from Fire moves.
The best moves against Fire types
These are moves many Pokémon learn, based on the learner counts in our data.
| Super effective type | Moves many Pokémon learn (power) |
|---|---|
| Water | Surf (90), Water Pulse (60), Hydro Pump (110), Liquidation (85) |
| Ground | Dig (80), Bulldoze (60), Earthquake (100), Stomping Tantrum (75) |
| Rock | Rock Tomb (60), Rock Slide (75), Stone Edge (100), Ancient Power (60) |
Rock does 4× to the Fire/Flying types (Charizard, Talonflame, Moltres, Ho-Oh), while Earthquake does nothing to them.
What Fire is good against
Fire moves are super effective on Bug, Grass, Ice and Steel. They are not very effective on Fire, Water, Rock and Dragon, and no type is immune to them.
The strongest Fire types
By base stat total, Ho-Oh (Fire/Flying) and Reshiram (Dragon/Fire) lead at 680. Heatran, Victini and Volcanion follow at 600, then Gouging Fire at 590. The most common Fire typings are pure Fire (36 species), then Fire/Flying, Fire/Fighting and Fire/Ghost (6 each). Fire starters are covered in starter Pokémon by type, and Charizard vs Blastoise, Vaporeon vs Flareon and Entei vs Suicune compare Fire against Water directly.
Practise the chart
The types lesson covers the basics. Type Clash and Type Master test how fast you can call a matchup, and the types quiz pack has more questions. A printable type chart PDF is on the printables page, and the Fire type page lists every Fire Pokémon.
