Water Type Weaknesses: Electric and Grass (Full Chart)

Published

Water types are weak to Electric and Grass moves, which do 2× damage to a pure Water Pokémon. That is the complete list. Water is not weak to Ice, Fire or Poison, whatever a quick search result tells you.

Water also resists Fire, Water, Ice and Steel. It is the biggest type, too: our data has 154 Water species, 74 of them pure Water. The counts below are all species from the pokee.si Pokédex.

What pure Water resists

A pure Water Pokémon takes half damage from Fire, Water, Ice and Steel moves. It has no immunities. Every other type does normal damage except Electric and Grass, which hit for 2×.

Water is the most common type of Pokémon, a position it has held since Generation II, with Normal in second place. Generation I introduced the most Water types, 32. Since Volcanion (Generation VI, Fire/Water), every other type has been paired with Water at least once.

The Ice resistance has one exception. Freeze-Dry is an Ice move from Generation VI that always does 2× to Water targets, even though Water normally resists Ice. Freeze-Dry is an Ice-type special move with 70 power, and 21 Pokémon learn it.

How the second type changes it

A second type is multiplied with Water's matchups. Shared weaknesses become 4×, and a type that resists what Water is weak to can cancel it. The two damage columns show Electric and Grass in that order.

Second type Weak to Electric / Grass damage Species Example
Normal/Water Electric, Grass, Fighting 2× / 2× 1 Bibarel
Fire/Water Electric, Ground, Rock 2× / 1× 1 Volcanion
Water/Electric Grass, Ground 1× / 2× 2 Chinchou
Water/Grass Poison, Flying, Bug 1× / 1× 3 Lotad
Water/Ice Electric, Grass, Fighting, Rock 2× / 2× 8 Dewgong
Water/Fighting Electric, Grass, Flying, Psychic, Fairy 2× / 2× 3 Poliwrath
Water/Poison Electric, Ground, Psychic 2× / 1× 6 Tentacool
Water/Ground Grass (4×) 0× / 4× 9 Wooper
Water/Flying Electric (4×), Rock 4× / 1× 8 Gyarados
Water/Psychic Electric, Grass, Bug, Ghost, Dark 2× / 2× 6 Slowpoke
Water/Bug Electric, Flying, Rock 2× / 1× 5 Surskit
Water/Rock Grass (4×), Electric, Fighting, Ground 2× / 4× 11 Omanyte
Water/Ghost Electric, Grass, Ghost, Dark 2× / 2× 3 Frillish
Water/Dragon Dragon, Fairy 1× / 1× 5 Kingdra
Water/Dark Electric, Grass, Fighting, Bug, Fairy 2× / 2× 4 Carvanha
Water/Steel Electric, Fighting, Ground 2× / 1× 1 Empoleon
Water/Fairy Electric, Grass, Poison 2× / 2× 4 Marill

Water/Ground is the odd one out. Ground makes it immune to Electric (0×) and leaves Grass as its only weakness, though that one is 4×. Water/Dragon and Water/Grass are the opposite case: neither takes extra damage from Electric or Grass. If you want the method behind these numbers, dual-type weaknesses explained shows the multiplying.

Water types with a 4× weakness

Of the 154 Water species, 28 take 4× from at least one type.

The 20 Grass cases are Water/Rock (11 species) and Water/Ground (9). The 8 Electric cases are all Water/Flying. For every 4× weakness in the game, see Pokémon with 4× weaknesses.

Which Water types escape each weakness

  • Electric: 19 Water species are not weak to it, through Water/Electric, Water/Ground, Water/Dragon and Water/Grass.
  • Grass: 29 are not weak to it, through Water/Poison, Water/Flying, Water/Dragon, Water/Grass, Water/Bug, Water/Steel and Fire/Water.

Abilities that block a weakness

Weakness Ability that blocks it Water species that can have it Examples
Electric Volt Absorb 2 Chinchou, Lanturn
Electric Lightning Rod 2 Goldeen, Seaking
Grass Sap Sipper 2 Marill, Azumarill

Only six Water species in our data can have one of these Abilities.

The best moves against Water types

These are moves many Pokémon learn, based on the learner counts in our data.

Super effective type Moves many Pokémon learn (power)
Electric Thunderbolt (90), Thunder (110), Thunder Punch (75), Wild Charge (90)
Grass Solar Beam (120), Energy Ball (90), Giga Drain (75), Seed Bomb (80)

Weather changes how hard Water hits back. Rain makes Water moves 50% stronger and harsh sunlight makes them 50% weaker, so an Electric or Grass attacker in sunshine has the easier job. The details are in Pokémon weather effects.

What Water is good against

Water moves are super effective on Fire, Ground and Rock. They are not very effective on Water, Grass and Dragon, and no type is immune to them. The Charizard vs Blastoise page shows the Fire matchup with real stats.

The strongest Water types

By base stat total, Palkia (Water/Dragon) is highest at 680, then Kyogre at 670. Manaphy and Volcanion (Fire/Water) have 600, Walking Wake (Water/Dragon) has 590 and Suicune has 580. The most common Water typings are pure Water (74 species), Water/Rock (11), Water/Ground (9), Water/Ice (8) and Water/Flying (8). Blastoise vs Swampert and Kyogre vs Groudon put two of them side by side with a rival.
