This page ranks Pokémon by base stat total, the six base stats added together. Slaking leads Normal at 670, and a crowd of 600s leads most other types. Base stats are not everything: Abilities, moves, typing and Speed matter too. Slaking itself shows why, because its Truant Ability makes it skip every second turn.
The numbers come from the pokee.si Pokédex data. To keep the lists useful, the tables skip Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast and Paradox Pokémon, which are covered in the strongest Pokémon by base stats and the strongest Legendary Pokémon. That article also has the one-row-per-type table of the single highest totals, so this one goes deeper on the runners-up.
Top 3 of every type
A Pokémon with two types appears under both. When totals tie, the order in a row is not meaningful.
| Type | Best | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Slaking 670 | Ursaluna 550 | Snorlax 540 |
| Fire | Arcanine 555 | Volcarona 550 | Magmortar 540 |
| Water | Gyarados 540 | Kingdra 540 | Milotic 540 |
| Electric | Electivire 540 | Magnezone 535 | Jolteon 525 |
| Grass | Hydrapple 540 | Tangrowth 535 | Gogoat 531 |
| Ice | Baxcalibur 600 | Lapras 535 | Vanilluxe 535 |
| Fighting | Kommo-o 600 | Annihilape 535 | Infernape 534 |
| Poison | Crobat 535 | Venusaur 525 | Glimmora 525 |
| Ground | Garchomp 600 | Ursaluna 550 | Swampert 535 |
| Flying | Dragonite 600 | Salamence 600 | Archeops 567 |
| Psychic | Metagross 600 | Delphox 534 | Exeggutor 530 |
| Bug | Volcarona 550 | Golisopod 530 | Centiskorch 525 |
| Rock | Tyranitar 600 | Archeops 567 | Rhyperior 535 |
| Ghost | Dragapult 600 | Gholdengo 550 | Annihilape 535 |
| Dragon | Dragonite 600 | Salamence 600 | Garchomp 600 |
| Dark | Tyranitar 600 | Hydreigon 600 | Kingambit 550 |

| Fairy | Florges 552 | Togekiss 545 | Primarina 530 |
Many of the 600s belong to the group fans call "pseudo-legendary", a fan term. The official name is Powerhouse Pokémon, and what is a pseudo-legendary Pokémon explains the rule. The Dragon row shows only three of the many Dragon types on 600; Hydreigon, Goodra, Kommo-o, Dragapult, Baxcalibur and Archaludon are on 600 too. Dragonite vs Tyranitar and Garchomp vs Dragapult put four of these 600s head to head. Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Poison, Bug and Fairy have no 600, so their leaders sit between 535 and 555.
Best pure-type Pokémon
Most of the top names above have two types. This table asks for a single type only, still leaving out Legendary Pokémon, and shows the best overall name in each type for comparison.
| Type | Best pure Pokémon, not Legendary | Total | Best overall (any group) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Slaking | 670 | Arceus 720 |
| Fire | Arcanine | 555 | Ho-Oh, Reshiram 680 |
| Water | Milotic | 540 | Palkia 680 |
| Electric | Electivire | 540 | Zekrom 680 |
| Grass | Tangrowth | 535 | Celebi, Shaymin, Zarude 600 |
| Ice | Vanilluxe | 535 | Kyurem 660 |
| Fighting | Mienshao | 510 | Koraidon 670 |
| Poison | Muk | 500 | Eternatus 690 |
| Ground | Hippowdon | 525 | Groudon 670 |
| Flying | Corvisquire | 365 | Lugia, Ho-Oh, Rayquaza, Yveltal 680 |
| Psychic | Espeon | 525 | Mewtwo, Lugia, Solgaleo, Lunala 680 |
| Bug | Pinsir | 500 | Genesect 600 |
| Rock | Gigalith | 515 | Tyranitar, Diancie 600 |
| Ghost | Dusknoir | 525 | Giratina, Lunala 680 |
| Dragon | Goodra | 600 | Eternatus 690 |
| Dark | Umbreon | 525 | Yveltal 680 |
| Steel | Klinklang | 520 | Dialga, Solgaleo 680 |
| Fairy | Florges | 552 | Xerneas 680 |
Goodra is the only pure-type Pokémon in this list with 600, and Slaking (670) is the only one above it. Pure Flying is the oddity: the best non-Legendary pure Flying type is Corvisquire at 365, because most strong Flying Pokémon have a second type. Check two-type pairs on the types page, such as Dragon/Flying or Dragon/Ground.
Which type is strongest on average?
This table averages the base stat total of fully evolved Pokémon of each type.
| # | Type | Fully evolved, not Legendary | Average total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragon | 26 | 538 |
| 2 | Fire | 33 | 510 |
| 3 | Steel | 30 | 503 |
| 4 | Ice | 25 | 501 |
| 5 | Fighting | 35 | 497 |
| 6 | Rock | 35 | 497 |
| 7 | Dark | 35 | 495 |
| 8 | Ground | 34 | 494 |
| 9 | Grass | 53 | 491 |
| 10 | Ghost | 33 | 490 |
| 11 | Water | 72 | 486 |
| 12 | Psychic | 42 | 486 |
| 13 | Poison | 34 | 482 |
| 14 | Fairy | 25 | 480 |
| 15 | Electric | 31 | 477 |
| 16 | Flying | 54 | 477 |
| 17 | Normal | 63 | 469 |
| 18 | Bug | 44 | 456 |
Dragon averages 538, the highest, and Bug averages 456, the lowest. Dragon has only 26 fully evolved members in this list, and several of them are 600s, so it stays at the top. The averages leave out Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast and Paradox Pokémon.
Stat leaders by type
If you care about one stat, these are the highest values in each type, again leaving out Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast and Paradox Pokémon.
Steelix and Shuckle have the two highest Defense values on the table, 200 and 230. The fast leaders are in the speed tiers page. For single-stat deep dives, see the highest Attack and highest Defense pages.
Where to go next
Pit two of these against each other in Compare, or see the Dragonite vs Tyranitar page for a 600-versus-600 matchup. A name with a high total is only a starting point. Check its Ability and moves before you build around it.
