Out of 1,025 species, 155 are genderless, 37 are always female and 26 are always male. Another 131 are 87.5% male, and that group includes every one of the 27 first partners.
All counts here are species counts from the pokee.si data. Bulbapedia counts forms too, so its totals can be different.
The gender ratios
Every species has a fixed ratio between male and female, or has none at all.
| Ratio (male : female) | Species | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Genderless | 155 | Magnemite, Voltorb, Ditto, Rotom, Rayquaza |
| Always male (100 : 0) | 26 | Tauros, Hitmonlee, Landorus |
| 87.5 : 12.5 | 131 | Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Eevee |
| 75 : 25 | 19 | Abra, Machop, Growlithe |
| 50 : 50 | 630 | Pikachu, Caterpie, Lapras |
| 25 : 75 | 25 | Clefairy, Vulpix, Jigglypuff |
| 12.5 : 87.5 | 2 | Litleo, Pyroar |
| Always female (0 : 100) | 37 | Chansey, Kangaskhan, Miltank |
The three biggest groups are 50:50 (630 species), genderless (155) and 87.5:12.5 (131). The ratio is the chance for each new Pokémon of that species, not a fixed count.
Litleo and Pyroar are the only two with the ratio the other way round: just 12.5% male. Pokémon Database shows Litleo as 12.5% male, 87.5% female.
Genderless Pokémon
There are 155 genderless species. Counting them by type of Pokémon:
- 45 are ordinary Pokémon that are not Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast or Paradox (including Metagross, which is sometimes called pseudo-legendary, a fan term).
- 56 are Legendary.
- All 23 Mythical Pokémon.
- All 11 Ultra Beasts.
- 20 are Paradox Pokémon. The other two, Koraidon and Miraidon, are Legendary and counted in the 56.
Just 15 of the 94 Legendary and Mythical species have a gender. They are Latias (female), Latios (male), Heatran (50:50), Cresselia (female), Tornadus, Thundurus and Landorus (all male), Kubfu and Urshifu (87.5% male), Enamorus (female), Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti (all male), Ogerpon (female) and Terapagos (50:50).
The 45 ordinary genderless Pokémon, by generation:
| Gen | Genderless Pokémon (not Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast or Paradox) |

Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are in the Legendary vs Mythical article, and the new Paradox group is in the Paradox Pokémon list.
Can genderless Pokémon have Eggs?
Pokémon Database says genderless Pokémon can only breed with Ditto, which is itself genderless in the data. Forty of the 155 are not in the No Eggs Discovered Egg Group, so those can produce Eggs when paired with Ditto. They include Magnemite, Voltorb, Staryu, Porygon, Beldum, Bronzor, Rotom and Klink. The other 115, including the Legendary groups, cannot breed at all. Manaphy and Phione are listed in an Egg Group but, per Pokémon Database, can only breed with Ditto.
The breeding guide and the Egg Groups article cover the rest.

Oinkologne needs a note. The data lists it as 100% male, but it has both a male and a female form in the games, and Pokémon Database shows 100% male for one and 100% female for the other. Its pre-evolution Lechonk is 50:50 in the data.
Gender and evolution
In a few lines, a later stage is a single gender and an earlier stage is not. In the data, the gender decides the evolution:
- Burmy (50:50) becomes Wormadam, always female, or Mothim, always male, at level 20.
- Combee (87.5% male) becomes Vespiquen, which is always female. Only a female Combee evolves, at level 21.
- Snorunt (50:50) becomes Glalie, or Froslass, which is always female, with a Dawn Stone on a female Snorunt.
- Salandit (87.5% male) becomes Salazzle, always female. Only a female Salandit evolves, at level 33.
- Kirlia (50:50) becomes Gardevoir, or Gallade, which is always male, with a Dawn Stone on a male Kirlia.
- Lechonk becomes Oinkologne, which has male and female forms.
The 87.5% male group
Of the 131 species, 81 are the 27 first partners and their evolutions. The other 50 are not partners. They include Eevee and its evolutions, fossil Pokémon such as Omanyte, Kabuto, Aerodactyl and Lileep, the Togepi line, Riolu and Lucario, Munchlax and Snorlax, Zorua and Zoroark, and Kubfu and Urshifu. See the fossil Pokémon list and Eevee evolutions.
Pokémon that look different by gender
The data flags 102 species as having visible gender differences. The generation split is steep:
Generations 1 to 4 account for 94 of the 102. Generation 7 has none. Oinkologne, from Generation 9, is the one single-gender species on the list.
