Caterpie evolves at level 7, and Zweilous turns into Hydreigon at 64. Between those two, the middle is level 30. Below are the levels for every evolution that needs a level and nothing else, grouped by the generation of the Pokémon that evolves.
Every number comes from the pokee.si evolution data, which holds the levels the games use. A sample (Caterpie, Dragonite, Hydreigon and Volcarona) was checked against Pokémon Database and matched. Evolutions that need something else as well are covered further down.
The numbers in short
About 346 evolutions in the data need a level, counting each regular form once. Of those, 322 need only the level and about two dozen need another condition on top. Regional forms are handled separately, below.
For the 322 plain level evolutions:
- the lowest level is 7 and the highest is 64
- the median is 30 and the average is 29.7
- the most common levels are 30 (28 evolutions), 36 (24), 16 (21), 35 (17), 20 (16) and 25 (15)
- 43 happen at level 16 or lower, 51 at level 40 or higher and 15 at level 50 or higher
The first step in a line is earlier than the second. The 247 first steps have a median of 27, and the 75 second steps a median of 36.
Evolutions are not the only way a Pokémon changes. For the other triggers, read how Pokémon evolution works.
Generation 1
The tables list the Pokémon that is evolving and the Pokémon it becomes. A level here is a minimum: the Pokémon evolves the next time it levels up at or above that number, unless something stops it, such as an Everstone.

The earliest and the latest
The ten lowest levels, with the generation each Pokémon comes from:
| Evolves from | Into | Level | Gen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpie | Metapod | 7 | 1 |
| Weedle | Kakuna | 7 | 1 |
| Scatterbug | Spewpa | 9 | 6 |
| Metapod | Butterfree | 10 | 1 |
| Kakuna | Beedrill | 10 | 1 |
| Silcoon | Beautifly | 10 | 3 |
| Cascoon | Dustox | 10 | 3 |
| Kricketot | Kricketune | 10 | 4 |
| Blipbug | Dottler | 10 | 8 |
| Spewpa | Vivillon | 12 | 6 |
And the ten highest:
| Evolves from | Into | Level | Gen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zweilous | Hydreigon | 64 | 5 |
| Drakloak | Dragapult | 60 | 8 |
| Larvesta | Volcarona | 59 | 5 |
| Dragonair | Dragonite | 55 | 1 |
| Pupitar | Tyranitar | 55 | 2 |
| Rufflet | Braviary | 54 | 5 |
| Vullaby | Mandibuzz | 54 | 5 |
| Arctibax | Baxcalibur | 54 | 9 |
| Cosmoem | Solgaleo | 53 | 7 |
| Cosmoem | Lunala | 53 | 7 |
Caterpie, Weedle and their lines evolve fast. Zweilous at 64 is the latest of all, and Dragonair and Pupitar, both at 55, are the late evolutions from Generations 1 and 2.
When the level is not enough
About two dozen evolutions need a level plus another condition, and about 20 more are triggered by a level-up without a level number. Some examples from the data:
- Wurmple becomes Silcoon or Cascoon at level 7, with a 50% chance each.
- Burmy evolves at level 20, into Wormadam if female and Mothim if male.
- Tyrogue evolves at level 20 into one of three Pokémon, depending on whether its Attack is higher than, lower than or equal to its Defense.
- Rockruff evolves at level 25 into Lycanroc, and the time of day (day, night or dusk) picks the form.
- Inkay needs level 30 while the console is held upside down.
- Sliggoo becomes Goodra at level 50 while it rains.
- Pancham needs level 32 with a Dark-type Pokémon in the party.
Level-up evolutions with no level number are about a move, an item or a place. Tangela evolves on a level-up while knowing Ancient Power, Sneasel on a level-up at night while holding a Razor Claw, and Pawmo after walking 1,000 steps and levelling up.
Several regional forms use a different level from the regular form. Alolan Rattata evolves at level 20 at night, Galarian Zigzagoon at level 20, and Hisuian Quilava becomes Hisuian Typhlosion at level 36. There are 21 such level methods, and each is shown on the Pokémon's own page.
Not every evolution uses a level
The data counts 62 evolutions by item (stones, mostly), 26 by trade and 19 by friendship. See trade evolution Pokémon for the trades, and first partner Pokémon by generation for the starters' lines.
